Japanese Embassy, New Delhi

About this project

The Japanese Embassy in New Delhi is one of the most significant Japanese institutions in India. When they commissioned us to install tatami in their Japanese ceremonial room, it was a signal that our work met the standards the Embassy expected from craftsmen back in Japan.

New Delhi presented logistical challenges distinct from Bangalore — transport, climate, and the specific requirements of the Embassy space. We managed these without compromising on material quality or craft.

What we delivered

A complete tatami room installation using hand-stitched Kumamoto igusa mats, custom-fit to the Embassy's specifications. Nishiwaki Kazuhiro travelled to New Delhi to complete the installation personally, ensuring the hand-stitching and fitting met the same standard as work done in Japan.

Materials

  • Kumamoto igusa grass — harvested and graded in Japan
  • Hand-stitched omote by Nishiwaki Kazuhiro
  • Traditional tatami doko (base material)
  • Custom bordering to Embassy specification
